GRADING POLICY
In accordance with Austin Independent School District Policy, the following guidelines will be implemented for fifth grade:
Ø Reasonable opportunity for makeup work will be provided, due to absence or illness. Teachers will use professional discretion in awarding a grade or accepting assignments missed due to extended absences or extenuating circumstances.
Ø Late work will be accepted with at least partial credit. Teachers will have the option of giving students alternative assignments due within the same time frame as the original time frame. Students will be made aware of the deadline established by the teacher.
Ø Accurate and complete documentation of each student’s progress will be recorded by teachers in a timely manner.
Ø When a student transfers from one school to another within the District, the sending grades will be included on the report card.
Ø Parents may request conferences with teachers concerning academic progress.
Ø Elementary grades will be based on mastery of the District curriculum for the student’s instructional level. Students identified as Gifted and Talented, Special Ed., or in an alternative program (working above or below grade level) will have comments on the report card indicating that the student is working above or below grade level.
Ø Letter grades of A, B, C, or F will be used to reflect academic achievement in each subject area. Teachers will assess and document individual progress a minimum of seven times for Language Arts, Reading and Math and a minimum of three times for remaining subjects.
Ø Teachers will provide weekly communication to parents/guardians via TEAMS/ papers sent home.
Ø A grade no lower than 50 will be recorded in order to encourage students and give an opportunity to achieve future success and mastery. Teachers will allow corrections for partial credit as per their own policies
Ø If a student receives a grade of C- or lower on their report card, parents will be asked to conference with the teacher.
Ø Progress reports will be sent home by mid-nine weeks if any subject’s average is C- (70 – 73) or lower.
BEHAVIOR POLICY
The fifth grade follows and enforces the school-wide rules: respect people, respect property and respect learning. We also have specific behavioral expectations of students at our grade level and within our classrooms. Consistent classroom rules include:
Ø Follow instructions
Ø Complete homework
Ø Demonstrate satisfactory work habits
Ø Treat others with respect follow school-rules
In addition, Oak Hill uses a Positive Behavior System (PBS) that enables your child to earn eagle coupons by making good choices and doing the right thing. These eagle coupons will be entered into a daily drawing for Eagle of the Day. Eagles of the Day have their names read during morning announcements. They are also recognized during Friday assemblies and have their photos displayed in the front hall. This program goes hand-in-hand with AISD ‘s Character Education Initiative.
During the year, as your child is learning to organize time and thoughts and refine work/study habits, he/she is also developing emotionally and socially. We place particular emphasis on developing the following characteristics of good citizenship and responsible behavior:
Ø Be kind and considerate of others
Ø Listen when others are talking
Ø Use kind words
Ø Be helpful
Ø Become a conscientious student
Ø Be prompt and prepared for lessons
Ø Respond immediately to directions
Ø Always do her/his best work
Ø Use appropriate behavior in various situations
These behaviors are taught in our daily lessons. Your child and teacher will set 1-3 goals weekly on the behavior sheet. Feel free to help your child write a school goal. We appreciate your support in reinforcing these behaviors when your children are at home.
We follow a consistent policy for infractions of classroom or school rules:
1. Verbal warning or reminder
2. Problem behavior is noted with a date in expectations area of the behavior sheet
3. Parents are notified through a pink slip and or phone call or conference after four dates are received in one week. Behavior sheets will come home Thursday afternoons.
4. Referral to the office
We will make every effort to work with you and your child to prevent problems and work on solutions that will protect and promote your child’s self-esteem and nurture success at school.
HOMEWORK POLICY
We believe that homework should be relevant to what is happening in the classroom and should provide review, practice and reinforcement of skills learned. Students should expect homework almost every night Mondays through Thursdays and only very occasionally over the weekends. We are consistent in our expectations that all students complete assigned homework neatly, correctly, and on time. Homework not completed on time will result in a date being recorded on your child’s behavior sheet. One grade is given per nine weeks which reflects homework completion in Reading, English / Language Arts and Math.
Classroom assignments are also expected to be finished on time. Unfinished classwork may be sent home for completion.
As you will hear us say repeatedly, one of our main goals this year is to prepare your children for the independence and responsibility that comes when they step into middle school. To attain this, we require ALL students to use the uniform assignment book used by all third, fourth, and fifth grade classes at Oak Hill Elementary. From the very first day of school we teach, model and reinforce the use of the assignment book, sometimes called an agenda or a planner.
AGENDAS/PLANNERS
Your child will bring home his/her planner every day. We require students to write down homework assignments and many other reminders on daily basis. We encourage them to get in the habit of checking the planner before leaving school in order to ensure they have all necessary materials to complete the homework. We urge them to routinely check the planner for assignments when they arrive home in the afternoon. A guardian must sign the agenda nightly after checking that the homework is done.
RED TAKE HOME FOLDER
Fifth graders have a red folder in which graded work, important information for parents and any forms or letters requiring parent signatures are placed. The red folder goes home every Friday. Please look through and discuss any contents with your child. Also, please clean out the papers and notes that do not need to be returned to school.
BEHAVIOR SHEET
In the student’s 3-ring binder there is a behavior sheet with one week on each side. This is where you will find information about how your child has done during the week. Students with fewer than 3 dates marked for not meeting an expectation at the end of the week will be rewarded with a free recess time on Friday morning. Students with one date will sit out for five minutes and those with two dates will sit out for ten minutes of that free time. If a student has three or more dates in one week where he/she did not meet the expectations that student will lose the free time and stay inside for detention.
Each student will have the behavior sheet checked for a parent signature first thing every Friday morning. Please review and sign the behavior sheet each Thursday evening. If you have any questions, comments or concerns about what is written on the behavior sheet you can write on it or contact the teacher about the situation.
